Installing and Running Apache Pig on Hadoop 2.x versions

Pig is a high-level platform for creating MapReduce programs used with Hadoop. The language for this platform is called Pig Latin. Pig Latin abstracts the programming from the Java MapReduce idiom into a notation which makes MapReduce programming high level, similar to that of SQL for RDBMS systems. Pig Latin can be extended using UDF (User Defined Functions) which the user can write in Java, Python, JavaScript, Ruby or Groovy and then call directly from the language.
Installing Pig is just as simple. What you will have to do is:
  1. Download the desired pig distribution from any one of the Apache Mirrors. It is best if you choose the latest version of Pig. Also, download the file whose name is like pig-0.12.1.tar.gz, where "0.12.1"is the version number.
  2. Extract Pig to a desired directory.
    1.  Simple way is to copy the tar.gz to the root directory where you want your installation to reside.
    2. Now, execute the following code in Linux bash at the directory
      tar -xzf pig-0.12.1.tar.gz
    3. You will have the installation ready.
  3. Editing Path
    1. To access the pig installation easily and run your scripts from anywhere, make sure to add the pig's bin in your path.
    2. To do this, open the file /home/user/.bashrc in your favorite editor and copy the following line at the end of the file.
      export PATH=/<my path to pig>/pig-n.n.n/bin:$PATH

    3. After doing all this, your Pig installation is ready for further configuration.
You might get the following error when running Pig scripts with Apache Hadoop 2.x. Here is a highlight of the error:
Found interface org.apache.hadoop.mapreduce.JobContext, but class was expected

Now, that's a problem. Don't worry, solving it is unbelievably simple. This is what you will have to do:
  • cd  to your pig installation directory. Yes, inside the Pig directory.
  • And run this code:
    ant clean jar-withouthadoop -Dhadoopversion=23

After that, try running your Pig script again. You will find that everything is alright now.
Any problems working this around or have any suggestions? Just comment it below :)

Questions about rooting and Android phone

When using Windows, you find you get different Administrative and System level setting such as Managing Services, Configuring Hardware properties and lots more. When you are using a smartphone, you don't get all these previliges. I know, sideloading the apps(installing apps from different sources eg: SD Card) is an in built feature in android, but sometimes only this is not enough. Rooting allows you to gain system level privileges(permissions to modify system files).
Unlocking the bootloader lets you change kernels in an android phone. This is much much higher way of completely customizing your phone and bringing in all kinds of hardware level changes- which also includes overclocking your CPU!
Now, there's more to it. In recent past, rooting was considered illegal and the phone manufacturers did not support it. They even warned customers about high service charges once you brick your phone using those hardware tweaks. In fact, Amazon pushed over-the-air updates which banned the customers from sideloading apps onto Nook. However, companies like HTC and Google allow their bootloaders to be unlocked and OS also to be change completely. Though you lose warranty, but something enthusiasm is the key to take a risk. Though if you handle your phone carefully and load the apps and roms(different community made android distributions for your phone) verified by the community, you won't have any problems.

Best books to kickstart learning web development

A complete beginner to programming and web development? Need something to kick start your learning of the languages that will let you convert your ideas into full featured web apps? Here are three books I recommend that you should start with. Sure you can find PDFs for the same, but I highly recommend you to buy these books, as they have lot of pencil-driven exercises as a part of their course. Also, they incorporate funny methods to keep you interested all time long. In fact, all of us thought that learning programming was just about reading texts and texts, I sure did, but this is certainly something new! They have lots of graphics and hilarious methods of understanding the cores of any language they publish a book about.

FIFA 14 Launch!

Yes, I am a soccer football fan and I love FIFA. In fact, I am so addicted to the game that unless I play one match, my day just doesn't pass. Until FIFA 13, everything was running fine, except for the disaster of FIFA 11 on PC which actually, sucked!
The reason why I hated FIFA 11 was that there was hardly any improvement on the features except for the gameplay engine that came from the one which was on FIFA 10 for PS2/3 already. I mean, WTF! we needed something that could be evolutionary and not you just a minor improvement.
Now, FIFA 14 comes up and by far, and is surely a boner! FIFA 13 was a really huge improvement to FIFA 12 based on gameplay, the features and the brand new Career Mode screen. Now, FIFA 14 guarantees a whole new engine for gameplay called the EA SPORTS IGNITE engine. This guarantees better movement, collisions and lot of other technical, realistic physics stuff. The new skill shot delivery option lets you control about what kind of shot you wanna take. And the concept of Live Worldwide Scouting in Career mode sounds way awesome that we had played till date.
For a full list of features, you can always check the EA SPORTS FOOTBALL website.
Here's the trailer:
And how about few screens?

Frankly, I can't wait to get my hands on this...

Install apps to Windows Phone from SD card

I know that there has been a method given on the Microsoft Windows Phone website about how to install apps in XAP formats from SD Card to your phone. Just keep these things in mind:
1) NO, you will NOT get the full version of paid apps via XAP, you will have to download it frmo the store on the phone. Even if you find XAPs on other website claiming it to be full version, it will not work.
2) If your XAP apps are not being displayed on the store, or the SD Card option is missing on the apps, restart your phone, wait for a while(2-5 minutes) and then start Marketplace app. This problem occurs in mid end phones like Nokia Lumia 620, or lower end phones.

To install apps from SD Card, follow the tutorial given on windows phone store here.

Why this method:
1) The Windows Phone Store downloads are very unstable on phones, so downloading them on PC is much more faster and less head ache giving method.
2) Saves data costs, duh! Everybody loves saving money, so do it this way too.

Your entire life on a timeline

Today, we spend most of our time online. Uploading photos on facebook, checking in on foursquare, updating status on facebook/twitter, sending email, etc. etc.
The guys at Dextera, yes the creators of the Siri clone-iris, have developed an app Friday. The app brings your entire digital life together and displays it in the form of a timeline. You can also search for the things that you want to recall or remember. For example, if you want to know at what all places you went to with your friend and when, the app displays all such activities. An extension called trails tracks all your locations and displays 'em on a map. Many more such extensions will be available in the future, as said.
The concept is cool, and the app is bug-less. Its smart to have one!

Temple Run Brave Short Review

We all have played and loved Temple Run. Just another phone game with great graphics and sense-making innovative controls.
Temple Run Brave is the same thing. Just that you have better and brighter graphics. The new arrow shooting bonus runs are a really good addition to the better version of the game.
Certainly, the game promotes Disney Pixar's Brave, but Imangi Studios have made this game paid on the Google Play.
There have been no lags, and really smooth gameplay.
